election fasting

We are asking the CG Midtown community to fast on the Wednesdays leading up to the election, beginning on October 9th. We encourage a full-day food fast, from after dinner on Tuesday until breakfast on Thursday (approximately 36 hours). To assist your fasting, we have created a weekly reflection and a list for intercessory prayer.

If you have children, consider how you may tailor their fasting to be different from yours. For example, after their Wednesday dinner, skip dessert or limit screen time on their devices. Use those moments to discuss the words from Deuteronomy, “People do not live on bread alone, but from every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Explain how, when we fast, we are reminded of our dependence on God.

Lastly, if work prevents you from fasting on Wednesdays, consider alternative ways you can participate: limit use of smartphones, don’t check social media that day, spend intentional time in solitude for prayer.

In 1978, theologian John Stott wrote these words: "However small our part may be, we cannot opt out of seeking to create better social structures, which guarantee justice in legislation and law enforcement, the freedom and dignity of the individual, civil rights for minorities and the abolition of social and racial discrimination. We should neither despise these things nor avoid our responsibility for them. They are part of God’s purpose for his people."

This is why we encourage all eligible voters to vote in the upcoming election on Tuesday, November 5. We are going to provide resources over the coming weeks with practical reminders about where and when you can vote. Additionally, to help us stay rooted in the way of Jesus during this political season, we’ll be providing spiritual formation resources.
