Our picture of spiritual formation is rooted in our understanding of the Gospel story. For Jesus, the gospel was centered on the reality that the “kingdom of God” was at hand. It was a proclamation of salvation, not just about forgiveness of sins, but a robust invitation toward union with God. God, through Jesus, was revealing the fullness of his love for His wayward children and His desire to redeem and restore all of creation. Life in the kingdom is participation in an active friendship with Jesus. This friendship, or “apprenticeship,” is the process of learning from Jesus the Gospel life, which is the abundant life God intended for all people to experience. Those who respond to the Gospel through repentance are baptized into a new community that is living in the way of Jesus and participating with God in redeeming the world. The Gospel is, therefore, an invitation from God to live a transformed life with Jesus in this present reality and co-labor with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit for the redemption of the world.

Against this backdrop, our definition for spiritual formation is the process of being shaped by the Spirit into our true self in Christ, filled with love for God and our neighbors.
